Lift Your Eyes

“I looked at the Lord on the throne of heaven, and the dove of peace flew into my heart. I looked at the dove, and it flew away.”

When we lift our eyes to Christ, there is calm amid raging waters.

But when we turn our attention to the gift instead of the Giver, even good things slip away.

Don’t focus on the dove.

Focus on the Lord.

Even neuroscience agrees.

A baby is shaped and soothed by the loving gaze of a parent.

We grow best under a faithful gaze of love.

A child’s nervous system settles not because the parent suddenly looks, but because the child sees the gaze that has been steady all along.

In the same way, our hearts regulate, come to rest, and calm when we lift our eyes to the Lord and discover He is already looking at us.

His gaze is filled with love and mercy.

It is gentle and humble,

the face that shines upon us.

That’s why peace returns.

Not because we earned His attention or affection, but because we finally met the gaze that never left.

And for those of us who never knew that kind of tenderness, the Lord Himself becomes the steady face we longed for, the One who restores, who heals, who teaches the heart how to be treasured.

“A father to the fatherless.” — Psalm 68:5

God reveals His heart not only as powerful above the storms of life, but as ever present and protective, especially for those who have lacked earthly covering or care.

When we call on His name, we find He is already there.

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” — Romans 10:13

"May the Lord bless you and keep you.

May the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you.

May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace."

— Numbers 6:24–26

Curving through the waves is the Latin phrase “Saevis tranquillus in undis”, meaning calm amid raging waters. Above, a cloud bears the letters CHRS, an early abbreviation for Christ.

This piece reflects the quiet truth that peace is found not by denying the waves, but by lifting our eyes to Christ.

As the waters rage below, we are seen, heard, held, and kept by a Presence that has been steady all along. Faith is not escape. It is being known by a loving Savior.
